When it was first exhibited in London, The Nightmare caused a sensation unlike almost anything the Royal Academy had seen: a sleeping woman draped backward across her bed, a grotesque incubus crouched on her chest, a wild-eyed horse's head thrusting through the curtain behind her. Fuseli offered no explanation, no mythological alibi — this was simply the unconscious, painted before psychology had a vocabulary for it.

The image proved so unsettling and so magnetic that Fuseli painted several versions, and it has since been credited as a direct ancestor of an entire genre: gothic horror, surrealism, and the modern visual language of the uncanny all owe something to this single canvas. For the collector who wants a conversation that never quite resolves itself, this is the piece that starts it.
