Ernst Haeckel was a biologist first, and it shows: over five years he produced one hundred lithographic plates cataloguing the astonishing symmetry of medusae, radiolarians, and other microscopic marine life, most of them invisible to the naked eye. But Kunstformen der Natur — "Art Forms in Nature" — did something Haeckel likely never fully intended: it handed early twentieth-century designers an entirely new visual vocabulary.

Architects and artists of the emerging Art Nouveau movement pored over these plates for inspiration; Antoni Gaudí is said to have kept a copy in his studio, and the radiating, organic geometry that defines his Barcelona buildings owes something to exactly this kind of image. This particular plate, with its spiked central form suspended like a star pulled from the sea, remains one of the most striking in the entire volume — a pattern-lover's centerpiece for a powder room, a study, or a designer's own office.
