A hallway seen through a sequence of white doors, each opening onto the next, receding until the last dissolves into shadow. There is no figure here at all — only architecture, light, and the discipline of empty rooms arranged like notes in a piece of music. Hammershøi painted variations on this enfilade throughout his career, and this is among the most stripped-down: pure structure, pure restraint.
It is less a painting of a place than a painting of the idea of passage — the sense of moving from one room into the next, of a house that keeps promising more than it shows. Suited to a hallway, an entrance, or any minimalist space where the architecture is the point, it rewards precisely the kind of room that asks for very little else on its walls.
