In the final years of the nineteenth century, Ogawa Kazumasa pioneered a hybrid technique — the collotype, hand-colored afterward by skilled artisans — that allowed Japanese photography to travel to the West for the first time in anything resembling its true palette. His albums of flowers and gardens, produced during the Meiji era as Japan opened rapidly to international trade, became prized exports: proof that photography could carry the same restraint and precision as a woodblock print.
This lotus, rendered in the soft celadon and blush tones only a hand-tinted collotype can achieve, carries that gentleness intact more than a century later. It suits a bedroom, a tea room, or any interior asking for quiet and a whisper of the East — a photograph old enough to have witnessed a century most of us only read about.
