Van Gogh painted Irises during his first week at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, working from the asylum garden in what he later described as an attempt to calm his mind through close observation of nature. There is no visible sign of distress in the canvas itself — only saturated blues and greens, a composition so confidently balanced that Van Gogh considered it, in his own words, a "study" rather than a finished statement, though history has judged otherwise.

It remains one of his most joyful and most beloved works, entirely free of the darker undertones that mark some of his later paintings. Universally loved and never the wrong choice, it lifts a kitchen, a breakfast room, or any sunlit space that asks simply to feel alive.
