Jan van Huysum was, by contemporary account, the most celebrated and most secretive flower painter in eighteenth-century Europe — so protective of his technique that he refused to allow students into his studio, and so meticulous that a single canvas like this one could take a full year to complete, its blooms often painted from specimens gathered across multiple seasons and combined from memory and sketches.

The result is a bouquet that could never have existed in nature — tulips, roses, and auriculas that bloom in different months, arranged together in a single impossible, overflowing vase. This is Dutch opulence at its most technically dazzling: a maximalist's dream over a dining buffet, or the centerpiece of a powder room dressed entirely to impress.
